Party supplies are a volume business with thin margins, which makes them unusually sensitive to two things: the minimum you can buy at, and the volume the goods occupy in a container.

What ships well and what does not
- Balloons, uninflated and bagged: excellent. Dense, cheap, and they compress.
- Paper tableware, flat-packed: good, though it is light enough to bill on volume.
- Foil and mylar decorations: good flat, terrible once assembled.
- Piñatas, large centrepieces, pre-assembled arches: poor. Almost pure air by the time they are boxed.
- Candles and anything flammable: restricted routes, must be flagged before booking.
Seasonal timing is the whole game
Seasonal party goods are bought six to nine months ahead. Halloween stock is sourced in spring; Christmas in late spring and early summer. By the time the season is visible in your market, the Chinese factories have moved on to the next one and the stock that is left is what nobody wanted.
Chinese New Year closes the market and stops production for weeks, and the slowdown starts before the official closure and ends after it. Any Q1 delivery has to be placed and shipped before that window, not during it.
Licensed characters are the category trap
A very large share of party goods on the Chinese domestic market carries licensed characters — film, television and cartoon properties — without a licence. These are straightforward counterfeits, they are seized at customs, and the liability lands on the importer, not the seller.
We do not buy them. If a design looks like a character you recognise, assume it is unlicensed unless the seller can produce the licence, and they cannot.
Minimums you can plan around
- Balloons: typically 100 per bag, minimum a few bags per colour.
- Paper tableware: 50–100 packs per design is a common booth minimum.
- Decorations: 50–200 pieces, lower for a test.
- Custom printed anything: 500+ and a separate set-up charge.

Common questions
- How far ahead do I need to order for a season?
- Six to nine months for the main buy, allowing for sampling, production, sea freight and customs. Air freight can rescue a late order but rarely at a price that keeps the margin.
- Can I mix many designs in one order?
- Yes — that is Yiwu's advantage. Each design has its own booth minimum, but they consolidate into one shipment.
- Are the balloons safe for children?
- Ask for the test report for your market before ordering. Latex balloons carry choking-hazard labelling requirements in most jurisdictions and the domestic Chinese packaging will not have them.
